I am a 32-year breast cancer survivor. On November 17, 1989, I was diagnosed as having stage II, had a modified radical mastectomy and endured 10 rounds of chemotherapy. At that time Oncologists were treating all breast cancers the same.
The BRCA1 gene was discovered in 1994. Screening was available in 1996. This was the start of new research and treatments. I am so thankful that I have been graced with the years to see all the advancements in diagnosis, treatment, and survival.
Being a member of Krewe du YaYas has given me an opportunity to help women in our community get the care they deserve. We are supporting each other in the ultimate fight for life.
